CHAPTER TWELVE

I sat in the van fuming. I knew that if I didn’t distract myself I’d likely be consumed by fury for hours. The worst case was that I might even cross the line into hypomania, and I didn’t want that. So I phoned Thorne, forcing myself to calm down and speak to him normally.

‘Where are you, mate?’ he asked.

‘About to set off. Are we meeting at Battersea?’

‘Yeah, I’ll be there to collect you. Dinner’s at eight, and we’re expected well before, to brief HRH.’

‘All right, fine. How are the interviews coming along?’

‘Nothing of interest, but the Rover’s shifted. It’s back at the party house. The two yobs in that yellow Astra turned up as well, after picking up the pooch from the poodle parlour. We’ve got eyes on. There’s three geezers out the back with their shirts off, working on their tans. Nice work if you can get it.’

I told Thorne about Granit’s property empire and his connections, and about the Maunsell fort he’d bought.

‘Now that is interesting,’ he said. ‘Very interesting.’

‘They’re made out of steel, not iron.’

‘Same difference. We need to investigate further, though, don’t we? It’s a lead, and a good one.’

‘We can hardly fly by. Nero’s unlikely to be sunning himself on the deck.’

‘We find out everything we can about the place. If it’s recently been sold there’s bound to be photographs, maybe even video, online.’

‘You’re right.’

‘Look, I won’t keep you, mate. Get a shift on, and meet me at Battersea, all right?’

‘One thing,’ I said, thinking of Iraq. ‘Bring my kit.’

‘Not civvies?’

‘Combats.’

‘I’m way ahead of you, mate. They’re in the boot of the car.’

I was about to laugh when it occurred to me that Wyvern, Thorne and the Prince might well be in collusion.

‘Heard about the DoJ?’ I said.

‘Yeah, I heard. Doubt it will amount to much. Top brass implicated, all these emails going back and forth, senior officer locked the report in his safe?’

‘Hope you’re right.’

‘You know I’m right. It’ll never go to court. Look, concentrate on the job in hand, eh?’

‘Heard from Sheila?’

‘Not yet. She’s supposed to be meeting the band members round their gaff.’

After talking to Thorne I felt better, but once I was on the way back to London my thoughts darkened and soon I was seething with resentment at Henry, and at Bullock, Kline and Heeley, the soldiers who’d murdered the al-Sinan brothers, and unable to think about anything else.

It took almost two hours to reach the heliport, and when I arrived I was weary and upset. It took a great deal of effort to hide it from Thorne, who’d set up office in the coffee shop. I kept telling myself to think of Nero, that there was a life at stake, and a job to do. Not that it helped much. I kept thinking about the medication I hadn’t taken as well, and would not be taking this evening either. It was only when Thorne produced my kitbag that I began to focus.

‘I’m going to get changed,’ I announced.

‘You all right?’

‘On the top of the wave.
